Observing Planets: a Beginner's Guide

Some of the brightest lights in the evening sky are not stars but planets. They drift slowly against the background of stars. Once you recognize them, you see the sky with different eyes.

Which planets you can see

Five planets are visible to the naked eye: Mercury, Venus, Mars, Jupiter and Saturn. Venus and Jupiter are among the brightest objects of all.

Mars stands out by its reddish color. Mercury stays difficult, because it always sits near the Sun and is visible only briefly.

How to tell planets from stars

Stars twinkle strongly, because their point of light is stirred by the air. Planets show a tiny disk and therefore shine more steadily.

Planets also always lie near the ecliptic, the line along which the Sun and Moon travel. Knowing this line makes the planets easier to find.

What Jupiter and Saturn show

Jupiter is the ideal first telescope target. Even at low magnification you see its four large moons as points of light beside it.

Saturn surprises almost everyone. Its ring is already clearly visible in a small telescope and remains an unforgettable sight.

When the best visibility is

You see a planet best when it stands high in the sky. Near the horizon the thick layer of air disturbs the image.

Especially favorable is the time when a planet lies close to Earth. Then it appears larger and brighter, a good moment for a first look.

What gear helps

With the naked eye you can recognize the planets and their wandering. Binoculars show Jupiter’s moons, a small telescope the ring of Saturn.

Which instrument suits you is explained in the beginner guide to buying a telescope. The start into the sky is in the astronomy for beginners section.

Frequently asked questions

How do I recognize a planet in the sky?

Planets shine with steady light and barely twinkle, while stars flicker strongly. They also lie near the ecliptic, the path of the Sun and Moon.

Which planet is most impressive in a telescope?

Saturn delights most beginners, because even a small telescope shows its ring. Jupiter scores with its four large, easily visible moons.

Which planets can I see with the naked eye?

Five planets are visible without aid: Mercury, Venus, Mars, Jupiter and Saturn. Venus and Jupiter are among the brightest objects in the sky, while Mercury, close to the Sun, can only be caught briefly.

What is the ecliptic and why does it help in searching?

The ecliptic is the line in the sky along which the Sun and Moon travel. Since all planets always lie close to this line, it narrows the search considerably and makes them easier to find.

When is the best time to observe a planet?

Best when the planet stands high in the sky, since near the horizon the thick layer of air disturbs the view. Especially favorable are times when a planet is close to Earth and therefore appears larger and brighter.

Why do planets twinkle less than stars?

Stars appear as point sources whose light the turbulent air swirls strongly, which makes them twinkle. Planets show a small disk whose light averages out, so they shine more steadily and calmly.
