Biosignatures Explained Simply

How do you recognize life on a world you will never set foot on? You look for traces that life leaves in the light. We call these traces biosignatures.

What a biosignature is

A biosignature is a measurable sign that points to life. On Earth, life has altered the air for billions of years. It is exactly such changes that we look for elsewhere.

We cannot visit alien planets. But their light reaches us. In this light sits the chemical signature of their atmosphere.

Which gases are suspicious

Oxygen stands out because it is highly reactive. Without constant resupply it would quickly disappear. On Earth, life provides that resupply.

Methane together with oxygen is also intriguing. The two gases react with each other and should not coexist for long. If they do, something must be replenishing them.

Why combinations count

A single gas is rarely convincing. Almost any one can be explained without life. Only an unusual mixture becomes a real puzzle.

Researchers therefore look for an imbalance. When gases appear together that should cancel each other out, it points to active resupply.

Why caution is so important

Lifeless processes can fake biosignatures. Volcanoes, starlight and chemistry produce similar gases. Such false trails must be ruled out first.

So the rule holds: extraordinary claims need extraordinary evidence. A biosignature counts only when several independent measurements confirm it.

How we search for them

The James Webb telescope measures atmospheres via the transit method. It splits the light and searches for the telltale patterns.

The most promising targets are planets in the habitable zone. There liquid water could exist, raising the chance of life, as the exoplanets section shows.

Frequently asked questions

Is oxygen a sure sign of life?

No. Oxygen can also form without life, for example when starlight splits water. Only together with other gases does it become a real suspicion.

Have we already found a biosignature?

No. There have been exciting hints but no confirmed find. Every measurement must be repeated independently before anyone speaks of a biosignature.

What exactly is a biosignature?

A biosignature is a measurable sign that points to life. Most often it is gases in a planet´s atmosphere that would be hard to explain without biological activity.

Why is a single gas not enough?

Almost any gas can also be explained without life, for example by volcanoes or starlight. Only an unusual combination, one that should normally react away, becomes a real suspicion.

Which telescope searches for biosignatures?

Above all the James Webb telescope measures the atmospheres of distant planets. It splits the starlight passing through the air and looks for the patterns of individual gases.

How do we know a signal is not faked?

Lifeless processes like volcanism or chemistry can produce similar gases. So a biosignature counts only once several independent measurements confirm it and false trails are ruled out.
