Quantum Entanglement Explained Simply
On this page
Picture a pair of gloves split between two boxes. Open one box and see the left glove, and you instantly know the right one is in the other. Entanglement is similar, but far deeper.
What entanglement really means
Two entangled particles have no fixed state of their own. They share one. Only measurement decides the outcome, and both sides match perfectly.
This behavior is at the heart of quantum mechanics. Unlike the gloves, nothing is actually decided before the measurement.
Why it bothered Einstein
Albert Einstein called the effect spooky action at a distance. It bothered him that the connection acts without delay, no matter how far apart the particles are.
Today entanglement is confirmed in many experiments. It is real and not a measurement error.
Why it breaks no speed limit
Despite the instant link, you cannot send a message faster than light with it. The individual results are random. Only comparing both sides reveals the pattern, and that comparison runs over a normal channel.
This very property makes entanglement useful for quantum computers and secure communication.
Frequently asked questions
Can entanglement send signals faster than light?
No. The individual results are random. Only comparing both sides reveals the correlation, and that comparison needs a normal channel.
What is entanglement used for?
It is the basis for quantum computers and for tap-proof quantum communication.
What is quantum entanglement in one sentence?
Two particles share one common state, so that measuring one instantly fixes the result of the other. Before the measurement neither has a fixed value of its own.
Is entanglement the same as two gloves in separate boxes?
No, that is a common misconception. With the gloves the outcome is already fixed beforehand, you just do not know it. With entanglement nothing is truly decided before the measurement.
How do we know entanglement is real?
So-called Bell tests have shown in many experiments that the correlations are stronger than any explanation with pre-set values allows. This confirms entanglement clearly.
Over what distances does entanglement work?
In principle over any distance. In experiments it has already been demonstrated over hundreds of kilometers and even between the ground and a satellite.
