The Big Bang & the universe

Edwin Hubble

1889–1953 · Discoverer of cosmic expansion

The American astronomer showed that galaxies exist beyond the Milky Way and that the universe is expanding.

In 1929 Hubble found a pattern: the farther a galaxy lies, the faster it recedes. The universe is growing.

This discovery turned the cosmos into a story with a beginning and gave one of the strongest pieces of evidence for the Big Bang.
